How does it feel to be back in Italy, after playing in Russia and Japan?

You know, I like Italy. It's a good lifestyle. It's a good volleyball league. It's different than other places, you know. Everywhere I go I find something new and interesting. And that's why I've changed around alot, because it's part of what I enjoy about my lifestyle. You know, I get to see the world a little bit. So, to come back to Italy, of course, I love Italy, you know. It's a beautiful country, and probably the best thing about it is that Americans' there, you know. So I have Heather and Lindsey Berg is what 30 min away. So, it's good, especially right now, holiday time.

[Interviewer: And you played against them recently?] Yeah, I lost to both of them in the past week. Sweet! At least, some Americans are winning. It's okay. You know, tough time..happens.

If you weren't playing as OH, which position would you play?

Setter. I'd want to, but I don't know if I can. But yeah, setter or right side [OPP position] I like the right side. You can run faster balls and run around. And I like defense.

DSC_0437mIf you were to create a team, with you on it of course, who else would round out the starting lineup?

Oh sh*, I don't know. I'm taking the 5th on that one.

Through your career, you had a number of coaches you played for. Which coach did you learn the most from and which coach did you love playing for the most and why?

It's a tough question. You know, Toshi got me when I was young. I had 8 years with him. Yeah, since I was 15, he was my coach. So, you know, he taught me the basics when I was young. And you know, when you're young the basics stick with you, you know, as you get older too. You learn more things. It's always your foundation, or your corner stone is picked up at the beginning. So, I have to give a lot of credit to him, for sure.

Would you like to coach someday?

I don't...if I develop a thing called patience, maybe. But right now my patience [chuckles] is getting better but [chuckles]. Um...as of now yeah, maybe. I don't know, maybe. I'd like to help, you know what I mean. It feels good to help and teach. I don't know if have the personality for it.

[Interviewer: You do.] I do? [laughs]

loganWhat type of gum do you chew? Is it the same all the time or it differs?

Oh. [laughs] Um..I know I chew... Today it's blue. Usually..any mint flavor. I like the stronger mint flavors. Whether it's Orbit or Extra, usually. I bring gum from the states, overseas.

[Interviewer: oh, so you do bring some things from the States?] Yeah, for sure. I'm used to it. Usually right now, yeah, Orbit or Extra. All mint flavors.

What's your favorite current TV show?

You know, it depends on where I'm at and what's available.

[Interviewer: in the US.] Oh, in the U.S.? NCIS. I watch NCIS all the time. Yeah. But I go through phases you know. But that's because I watch.. In Russia I watch season all...like, I watch all Friends and Seinfeld, in Russia.

[Interviewer: Oh, you like Friends?]
Yeah, I love Friends. But I've seen it all. So I have to switch, you know. And then..

[Interviewer: You don't have to listen to the russian translation, cause you probably know all the episodes.] No, the DVDs that uh..

[Interviewer: ah, you buy DVDs?]
I don't buy them. Usually people, my mom sends them to me cuz she feels bad or like my physio [physiotherapist] Chris, that was here in Russia, loves Friends so she had a bunch of DVDs. And so she gave those to me.

What music do you listen to before a game to get you ready for the game?

You're going to laugh at me..[smiles]. I have to calm myself down, so I usually listen to chill music. Yeah, if I get too riled up I kinda blew my top. So, whether it's Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson to country.

[Interviewer: so still Dave Matthews?] I listen to Dave. Like today, I listened to Keith Urban.So...It differs, you know. If I'm feeling down one day, I'll like put in rap, hip-hop or something like that. Or something with a little bit more soul to it. But usually it's chill. Cuz if I get too pumped up I don't play good.

DSC_0019sWe heard a rumour you like to cook?

I love to cook. Yeah.

[Interviewer: So, what's your favourite meal to make?] You know, it's hard. I mean, I love.. When I was a kid I remember making Thanksgiving with my mom. We would get up at 6:00, put the turkey in and spend all day making it. And when she would go to work out I would and finish on the stove top. So, I mean, I think.. That's the part of things I miss the most about away to, you know, little things like that. But in the house we kinda make what's fastest, you know, what you need. You know, I'm Hawaiian so I make a lot of rice and stir-fry and stuff like that. Get the protein, vegetables and some carbs.

Are you good at singing?

Singing? I think everyone thinks they're a rock-star in their own head.

[nterviewer: so you do karaoke?] No, I don't do karaoke unless I'm really drunk. No, I sing,..I've belt it in the car and that's about it. And in my apartment. But I don't sing in front of people. I have a little bit of [inaudible]

Name one thing you wanted to do but never got the chance or time?

Finish school. College.

Will you ever be back in Russia playing?

I don't know. I don't know. I kinda take things as they come so.. Yeah, maybe.
